Secretary’s Report:  Nola Adler mentioned the crash of the MALA computer and the purchase of a new laptop and software, and how this impacted the annual meeting as data was not able to be pulled.  The board agreed on the date of Saturday, October 11 for the annual meeting, provided all data would be available for inclusion to the annual letter 30 days prior to the meeting, in accordance with the MALA bylaws.

Open Forum

Annie Hensley said both Sambo Lewis & St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church sent notes of thanks for MALA’s $100 donation to the church in Mary Fran Lewis’ memory.

Kevin Hensley said that Greg Sansing and Steve Meadows volunteered to spray the weeds in the walking path along the main road, and purchased the weed killer to provide them.

Kevin Hensley also said this Saturday at 6:30 AM people would gather at the tennis courts to lay down the repair material over top of the concrete.  The courts will be locked after that so the epoxy can set up in preparation for painting.

Committee Reports

Appearance and Beautification

Chair Butch Cheatham reported that the boards and fencing at the front entrance are rotten, and he’d like to make repairs.  A motion was made, seconded and passed without dissent for him to move forward on the project.

Architectural Committee Report

Chair Kevin Hensley reported:  “Since my last report, four requests were submitted to the Committee for review and they were approved. They are as follows:

  • One attached garage
  • One addition to a house
  • One shed
  • One deck

No requests for approval are currently under review.  No issues or complaints are currently being investigated by the Committee.”

Aviation

Chair FJ Hale reported an instance of a vehicle driving on the runway, and stated his intention to move the sign about no driving on the runway to a place more noticeable.

Common Areas and Facilities

Chair Jim Monaco reported he made some repairs to the metal roof on the stable at Oak Park and said more extensive repairs will be needed.  He also expressed a desire to paint the stable inside and out, and store some of the excess furniture up in the loft so the place is neater and easier to clean.

Deer Control

Chair Scott Diamond reported one kill last week, and the only one this year so far.  He mentioned that VA now allows hunting on Sunday and that if we exercise the permit on Sundays it will be with discretion.

Roads and Maintenance

Chair Mike Gupton reported he solicited 3 bids which were about $6,000 different in price between the two lowest. He proposed we pave Merifield with asphalt from the intersection at Lakepoint to the road by the airport, asphalt the logging damage on Hazelnut , and tar and gravel various side roads, to include Hazelnut, Highpoint, Eagle Perch, Cheverly, Maplewood Ct., Cedar Lane, Goat Island, Terrace Rd., Darcy, Briarfield, Hollifield,  Lakepoint  (Highpoint to end), Center Court, and Redbud.  There are places on Merifield Dr. and Center Court that need roots removed prior to repair/paving.  He also wants to put a new culvert under the road on Merifield Dr. prior to paving to eliminate rain water from running across the road during heavy rains.
