The Merifield Appleseed Project (our apple orchard) is coming into autumn in good form. We have enjoyed the irrigation system (the new well [thanks to Kevin Hensley!]), and our drip buckets are doing a fine job of keeping the trees properly irrigated. We have succeeded in mulching all of the trees with grass clippings from the airport (thanks so much to Ernie Mallard and Sambo Lewis for their help!), and we are steadily making progress on the deer fencing using deer netting rather than fishing line.

During the summer, the heat challenges us all when it comes to weeding and working outdoors, but several of our volunteers (Sandy Parke, Moe and Gale Tetreault, Gary Trimmer, and a number of others) have braved the heat and bugs to keep our trees happy.

We are planning another planting later in the Fall, so if you are interested in volunteering as part of the Apple Orchard Care Team, please email Lee Baldwin (lbaldwin01@aol.com). If you have specific trees that you would like to care for, please let her know. The planting day and a couple of care days will be scheduled and announced — with proper social distancing precautions.

And in advance, thank you all for supporting this wonderful project!
